Service Held for Rediscovered WWII Diggers
A memorial service has been held in Sydney for two World War II soldiers whose identities remained a mystery for nearly 70 years. Lieutenant Scobbell McFerran-Rogers and Private John Whitworth were members of the Z Special Unit, a special forces unit made up of allied soldiers.The pair died in June 1945 while on a mission to rescue two United States airmen whose plane went down in the Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia. The body of a Timorese interpreter named Roestan who worked with the unit has also been identified.
