Korea Vet Clinton Van Gelder First to Be Buried at the New Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery

Clinton Van Gelder, an Air Force veteran from Interlaken who served in the Korean War, today became the first person laid to rest at the new Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery. About 50 friends and family members turned out for the 40-minute ceremony on a sun-filled morning.

Van Gelder died at age 77 on Jan. 22, 2010. His dying wish had been to be buried at Sampson, where he underwent basic training after joining the Air Force in 1952. His widow, Eva, had his remains stored in a nearby cemetery until that wish could come true.
