‘First Australian WWI Doco’ Goes Online

Rare footage of Australian soldiers at the 1916 Battle of Pozieres, filmed for what is believed to have been Australia’s earliest attempt at a war documentary, has been made available online.

The Western Front battle saw 23,000 Australian soldiers killed or wounded over a six-week period in July and August 1916. The footage, which runs for more than 10 minutes, has been published in collaboration with the Australian War Memorial. In the video, Australian troops are shown building trenches and preparing for battle in Pozieres.
