State Library of Queensland, Australia, Donates 50,000 Photos to Wikimedia Commons

Posted by admin on Jan 5, 2011

Australian history is now a little easier to explore on the web thanks to a donation of tens of thousands of photos to a free online archive. The State Library of Queensland has donated 50,000 pictures to Wikimedia Commons, a free repository of image and sound files available to be used anywhere on the web.

It is the biggest contribution from Australia and the fourth largest in the world to Wikimedia Commons, which is run by the same body as Wikipedia. The photos date back to the mid-19th century and show events including the Brisbane floods of 1893 and 1940 and the construction of the Story Bridge in 1938.
