Bill do Carmo always wondered what happened to his Uncle Antone.

Antone "Carmo" Baptiste, his grandfather's brother, suddenly disappeared from New Bedford some time in the 1930s. "Women trouble" was the family story for his leaving.

Eventually, the great-uncle wrote his sister that he had settled in Hawaii, where many Cape Verdean whalers had landed as far back as the mid-19th century.
