America's Last Surviving WWI Vet Celebrates 109th Birthday
America's last surviving World War I Veteran and local man Frank W. Buckles turns 109 years-old Monday.The Charles Town resident was born in 1901 and was 16 when he talked his way into the Army driving ambulances and helping return prisoners of war to Germany.
Later as a civilian, he was captured by the Japanese and spent three years in a prison camp.
Mr. Buckles was born in Harrison County, Missouri.
