Pamela Smith got down on her knees in a cemetery off Mount Zion Road near Cincinnati, Ohio, on a recent October day. Then she began to dig.Gravestones she uncovered had fallen and settled into the earth in the abandoned cemetery of Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, which organized about 1809 but is long gone.
She used a shovel to pry up a stone so she could take its picture, then gently laid it back down.
Smith, 52, a trustee of the Clermont County Genealogical Society, has photographed more than 33,000 gravestones in about 100 cemeteries over the last four years.
