Centennial of the busiest day in Ellis Island

Posted by admin on May 21, 2008

April 17, 2007 marks the Centennial of the busiest day in Ellis Island’s storied immigrant processing history, when 11,747 newcomers entered America through that gateway. A usual day saw some 5,000 immigrants processed.

In celebration of this historic day The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation presented its 6th Annual Ellis Island Family Heritage Awards at 11 A.M. in the Great Hall at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The awards celebrate the Golden Door to America for the 17 million immigrants who came to this country through the Port of New York and Ellis Island.
