A little precision on GeneaNet's policy on free things
Further to various questions on several genealogical discussion lists, we would like to remind you what is GeneaNet's philisophy on the subject.
- ?
- Can any one cancel freely at any time his/her family tree on GeneaNet ?
- Why are there paying data on GeneaNet ?
- Why can't we download images of records in Records on Line and Registers on Line if we are not a member of the GeneaNet Privilege Club ?
1. Does GeneaNet sell its users data or does it envisage to do so ?
GeneaNet is now ten years old. Since its creation, GeneaNet is of free access whereby one can share his/her family tree freely and contact freely all members of the website.
As mentioned in GeneaNet General Conditions of Use , the user who remits his/her data on GeneaNet gives GeneaNet a right of use (this is a legal mention that allows us to broadcast them on the website) whithin a non-commercial business.
Extraict of article 12 :
Inasmuch as putting these data on line is made on GeneaNet website, the User gives GeneaNet, as a free gift, all business rights to put them on line, notably the rights for digitalizing and broadcasting on the internet in all languages, the right for translating and adaptation.Inasmuch as putting these data on line on the Site has for aim to make them accessible to all notaby allow other users to reproduce them and include them in their own data, in particular their own family tree, the User grants all necessary rights for using his/her data, notably for reproduction, adaptation, translation, broadcasting on the internet in all languages, and within a non commercial business.
For over 10 years, GeneaNet NEVER sold the least of its users genealogical data. We know very well that these data are the primary richness of GeneaNet. It would be self-suicide to modify our policy with the risk of mostly our users take back their data.
Therefore, we hereby reaffirm solemnly that GeneaNet will not give or sell data being not its property and in particular data freely remitted by hundreds of thhousands of GeneaNet members.
2. Can we freely and at any time cancel our family tree on GeneaNet ?
Yes, each member of GeneaNet can as he/she wants cancel his/her family tree on GeneaNet. In this case, data will be cancelled definitely on GeneaNet servers.
3. Why are there paying data on GeneaNet ?
The original philosophy of GeneaNet, to which we never derogated, is to give access to ALL existing genealogical sources, whether on line or not, free or paying.
4. Why can't we download images of records on Records on Line and Registers on Line if we are not member of GeneaNet Privilege Club ?
First, let's remind you thaét records remitted on Records in Line or Registers on Line can be viewed freely on GeneaNet. Dowloading the images is for members of Privilege Club only for the following reasons :
- downloading an image has a real cost in terms of band.
- contributors who send their records on line wish to limit the use that can be done of their works (they also have the possibility not to authorize the download af a record)
However, nothing stops you, if you are not a membner of the Privilege Club, to contact directly the contributor and ask him/her to send you the record by email.
We hope this will answer all of your questions.
