We liked it ! : The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives

No less than 5 million air reconnaissance photographs taken during WW II are now on line. It is the most formidable documentary event of this nature. It is accessible by all internauts. More that 5 million air reconnaissance photographs taken during WW II are now available on the British Site "Evidence In Camera".
These photographs, taken by the Royal Air Force, tell the story of war as seen from the skies; its horrors and its moments of glory. And the details are astonishing. "These pictures ennable us to view the real war in the front lines" says Allan Williams, the project manager. "It is like a new view of the action in real time".

Indispensable tool during the conflict, aerial photographs have nowadays an historical function and offer an unprecedent angle of view. Furthermore, the size of the collection now on line allow a detailed view of all the facets of this war : from the concentration camps to the Normandy landing beaches, the naval battles and Germany devasted in 1945. The launching of these archives on line, unclassified a few years ago, also pay tribute to the pilots who took these very detailed photographs : they were very audacious, flying unarmed, without protection and alone, often at very low altitudes to accomplish their mission.
