A new method of searching

You needed it? GeneaNet made it! Did you notice the new tab in the GeneaNet search bar? This new tab corresponds to a new method of searching: An associated search!
Always attentive to the expectations of its users, GeneaNet has worked many months in order to make this method of searching available!

* What is an associated search?

An associated search is a method of searching which lets the user search 2 patronyms at the same time. It identifies all the accounts which have the 2 patronyms being searched. This does not mean that the 2 patronyms are linked, rather the results of the search help eliminate the databases where one or the other does not contain the patronym.

* Why are associated searches not possible for couples?

The GeneaNet database is a database of quick lists. Thus, only names, communes and dates are available. The links between individuals are non-existent whereas they do in the GeneWeb trees.

So, finding a couple in the results of an associated search is possible although not in every search of course.

Searching for SMITH and MARTIN will show all accounts where these two names appear. In some accounts, you will surely find some marriages, cousins or family links while in others, these 2 patronyms will be present without a link being made between the two.

* Why is there a need to specify a country and eventually a region in the associated search?

This searching mode, highly valued by the GeneaNet users, requires important technical resources because it uses a double searching system. The system searches for the first patronym in order to identify the accounts containing this patronym and then searches for the second patronym using the results of the first search.

In order to provide reasonable respond times, we have restricted this search to specific countries and regions.

Actually, this geographical restriction will allow you to pinpoint your search and thus obtain better results.

Still, this search mode is provided in Beta mode and is susceptible modification and improvements in the coming months. Do send us your comments via the discussion forums.

In order to optimize your searches, the "commercial" databases have been excluded from this search mode.

* How to access the associated search mode?

The associated search mode is for the exclusive use of privileged members of GeneaNet. In order to access the associated search feature, please make sure you have identified yourself on GeneaNet as a privileged member.
