New: Annotate Pictures in your Family History Book!

GeneaNet Club Privilege members can now annotate pictures in their family history book.

This will help you to identify family members and ancestors, tell about places where photos were taken, and comment sweet moments in the life of your family.

To create/edit your family history book, log in as "wizard" on your online family tree, then click on the "Family history book" button.

Your family history book can be a few pages or hundreds.

New: Annotate pictures

To insert an image into a your family history book, first move the cursor to the location in the document that you want the picture, and then click on the "Image" button.

Select your image file, resize the picture if needed and select the "Allow Notes" option.

The code is added to your family history book. Click "OK" to confirm and view the image.

Click on the "Add a note" tab and drag the frame to the location that you want the note. Then enter the title and the text of your note.

You can add as many notes as you need, and you can edit/remove/hide your notes.

The notes are automatically displayed when the mouse moves over the picture.

The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG) 7 has been released.

To get the upgrade from v5 or v6, just go back to your previous TNG downloads page (http://tng.lythgoes.net/downloads5 or http://tng.lythgoes.net/downloads6). There is no direct upgrade from v4 or earlier. To upgrade from one of those versions, you must first upgrade to v5 or v6.

Changes:

• Copy Person from Another Database - A new Active Source is now created for each copy/merge session. Each new person or event that is added to the Target Database is referenced to the Active Source. The Notes for the Active Source contain the complete log of the merge process.
• Copy Person from Another Database - Fixed an occasional hang at the end of the merge process. This mainly occurred on large databases on heavily loaded machines.
• Merge Source Fields from another Database - Added a new menu option under File -> Compare and Merge to compare and merge Source fields from another database.

The Complete Genealogy Reporter 2008.1 build 80623 has been released.

New:

• "Ignore OBJE tags" option (Data Filters section) to ignore all image records within the GEDCOM file. This is provided for users with files containing a large number of image tags who wish to produce text-only reports; it removes the overhead associated with processing the images.

Changes:

• Fixed problem returning 'error #10023 invalid field specified in the index 'title' for the table 'GenSrc'.
• Pre 4.2 releases of Genota permitted the Subject field to be empty causing issues for some users. This build forces the literal 'NEW SUBJECT' as the Subject where the field has been left blank, and assigns the default value of 'NEW SUBJECT' to all new Notes.
• Corrected the TAB order on the Notebook Header.
• The FILE NO. field has been extended to 250 characters.

Pocket Genealogist 3.21 has been released.

Changes:

• Device/Desktop: Fix to "Direct" RootsMagic import and display of birth/death dates on 3-gen and other views. (this error was introduced with 3.20).
• Desktop: Initial support for "PhpGedView" GEDCOM Import profile.
• Device: Support for Smartphones (non-touchscreen) with 320x320, 400x240 and 440x240 screens. Also PocketPC's or Smartphones (touchscreen) with 240x400 and 480x800 screens. Pocket Genealogist is not yet "optimized" for these resolutions (There will be wasted space on the screens), but the program will run. We will add better support on request.
• Desktop: Change to GEDCOM import to work with GEDCOM files that have inconsistent line end sequences. (Rare Situation, this has only been reported a half dozen times over the last 9 years).
• Device/Desktop: Danish and Portuguese update.

Times Online archive offers 20m articles for free

Times Online has rolled out an elaborate digital newspaper archive stretching back more than 200 years.

The archive includes more than 20m articles from every edition of the Times, bar a small number of damaged issues, from 1785 to 1985.

It includes the Thunderer's coverage of events such as the Battle of Waterloo, the first convicts arriving at Botany Bay and the execution of Marie Antoinette. Other issues cover the 1851 Great Exhibition, the Jack the Ripper murders in 1888 and Amelia Earhart's solo flight across the Atlantic in 1932.

The archive also includes letters to the editor, photographs and adverts, with each page presented as it was printed in the paper on a parchment-coloured screen.

Legacy Charting - Important update instructions

The following announcement has been posted on the Legacy blog:

As you may know, Legacy Charting's Pre-Release Edition will expire on June 15, 2008. When you installed Legacy 7.0 Deluxe edition, Legacy was supposed to "override" the Pre-Release edition of Legacy Charting with the Deluxe edition of Legacy Charting. Well...it didn't. We've identified the small glitch and have corrected it.

Therefore, if you installed both the Pre-Release Edition of Legacy Charting AND you installed Legacy 7.0 Deluxe Edition, you will need to download a special update.

Before June 15

If you do this before June 15, all you need to do is open Legacy Charting, click on the Tips & Updates tab, and click on the button in the Updates section to download and install the new update.

June 15 or after

If you do this on or after June 15, when you try to run Legacy Charting, you will receive a message that directs you to the Legacy Charting website. There you will find a link to download the update. Or, just click here to download and install the update.
