Backup Your Data

For anyone who uses a computer on a regular basis, data backup is very important. Your GeneaNet data is backed up on solid state backup servers in our secure data center, but what if you accidentally remove individuals from your family tree?

To export your family tree, select My GeneaNet : Online Family Tree : Save.

GeneaNet - Sauvegarder ses données
Export your complete family tree:

Available file formats are:

GW: GeneWeb File Format. Only if GeneWeb has been installed on your computer or if you only need a data backup.

GED: GEDCOM File Format. If you want to share you data or import it in a genealogy software.

ZIP: Zipped GEDCOM File Format.

Export a family line:

GeneaNet - Sauvegarder ses données
You can export the ancestors or the descendants of any individual.

Type in the name and first name as they appear on your online family tree or the GeneWeb number of the individual.

To find out the GeneWeb number, log in to your online family tree as Wizard, then click on the "Update Individual" link. Full name and GeneWeb number will be shown at the top of the individual page.

New: Simplified Online Family Tree Editor & GEDCOM File Test

GeneaNet users had, until now, the ability to build their online family tree using GeneWeb, a free interface created by Daniel de Rauglaudre, research engineer for INRIA .

GeneWeb is a powerful genealogy web interface but we know how difficult and frustrating it can be to some of the GeneaNet users. That's why we have added a new Simplified Online Family Tree Editor.

Simplified Online Family Tree Editor

This new feature is mostly aimed at new users and first-time visitors. You couldn't take advantage of it if you already built your online family tree.

It will be your default family tree editor when you will register to GeneaNet but you will be able to switch to GeneWeb at anytime.

What can you do on this editor?

- Add/modify/delete individuals
- Link individuals
- Add pictures and create a slideshow
- Add notes
- List individuals in alphabetical, ascendant or descendant order
- Show your family on Google Maps

GEDCOM File Test

You can now upload GEDCOM files up to 10 MB.

The interface shows a progress bar while uploading and your file is automatically checked.

When successfully done, the number of individuals in your family tree and the number of entries in your GeneaNet Index are displayed.

If there was an error in your GEDCOM file, you will be notified to correct it and try again.

Verifying your indexed data

You can easily verify if your data have been successfully indexed on the GeneaNet web site.

Remember that indexed data and online family tree are not the same thing!

To index your data, select the "Index your data" option from the "My GeneaNet : Online Family Tree : Update" menu.

On the same page, the option "Export your index" generates a text file from your indexed data to import it into any spreadsheet.

Now, here is a trick to easily verify your indexed data:

Go to the "Search by Place" page and just type in your GeneaNet username in the "Limit the search to a username" field. Be sure that all of the other fields are left blank.

The search results list will be displayed as if you were any GeneaNet user.

Calculate relationship between two persons

Did you know that GeneaNet can help you calculate the relationship between two persons from your online family tree?

Select the person who will be the subject of the relationship and click on the "Calculate relationship" link at the bottom of its individual page.

The relationship calculator form will open as below:

GeneaNet - les calculs de parenté

Just type in the name of the relative. If needed, just type in the surname and the list of persons with that surname will open to select the individual.

Options are:

- Ancestors/By marriage: find out the closest common ancestor for both the subject and the relative
- Shortest parth: calculate relationship between two persons whatever their lines are

- Long display: display individual names, dates and places
- Include spouses: display individual spouses
- Images: display pictures
- Border: display frames

Relationship calculation:

GeneaNet - les calculs de parenté
GeneaNet - les calculs de parenté
Shortest path between two persons:

Note: Please check your data if a loop is detected. The relationship calculator can't work if any person of your family tree is its own ancestor!

Personalize your Online Family Tree browsing

Building your online family tree is fast and easy. But do you know that GeneaNet offers powerful and free features to personalize it?

The main purpose of GeneaNet is to share. When publishing your family tree data, you make it accessible to friends and other family members but it will become public for all other visitors to enjoy. GeneaNet offers you powerful and free features to personalize your online family tree so it will be pleasant and original.

To personalize your family tree, select the "My GeneaNet : Online Family Tree : Customize" menu, then the "Presentation, Browsing" option.

Family Tree Individuals

Fly over the thumbnails to see a preview of the templates.

Template "A" is the most simple and it only shows name, first name, birth date and death date of the individual parents. Template "I" is the most complete and it shows descendants lists, birth date and death date of the indivudial family members, etc.)

GeneaNet - personnaliser son arbre
Some templates show ascendant lists, images, sibling, etc.

Contents

Select the number of generations to be displayed on ascendant/descendant lists, the number of relatives, the number of individuals to be treated in the statistics, the display of surnames, etc.

You can also choose to hide your family tree notes. If not, check that no personal information has been entered in your notes!

Publish your family pictures on GeneaNet

There are actually two ways to publish family pictures on GeneaNet: the photo gallery and the online family tree. Each method works a little bit differently and they are not connected.

THE PHOTO GALLERY

GeneaNet - photos et portraitsSelect the My GeneaNet : Galleries : Pictures menu.

Then you will be taken to a page where you can upload one picture or several picures at a time, and manage your album.

1. Files that can be uploaded:
All images must be in the file format of: .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png.

2. Upload picture:
First, fill in all required information. If you can't identify the picture, check the "add this portrait in the unidentified photos database" option and the other searchers could help you.

To upload several pictures at a time, you will need to build a batch text file. The file format is clearly explained on the site.

3. Manage your album:
You can remove any picture from your album or modify the information of any picture. To replace (overwrite) a picture, you will need to delete it and upload it again.

Note: The purpose is to share ancestors pictures so the family picture gallery is moderated. Please, don't try to upload a photo of your baby!

GeneaNet - photos et portraits

THE ONLINE FAMILY TREE

1. Files that can be uploaded:
All images must be in the file format of: .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png.

2. Attach a picture to an individual:
Go to your online family tree homepage. Log in as a "wizard" and select an individual. On the bottom of the page, click on the "Update Individual, Family, Media" link. You will be taken to a new page where you will just have to click on the "Send an image" link (see below) to upload a picture.

GeneaNet - envoyer une photo

Note: The images attached to a GEDCOM file are not imported in your online family tree. You will need to upload them manually. But the images won't be removed and their links won't be broken each time you will update your online family tree from a GEDCOM file!

GeneaNet - envoyer une photo

ATTACH AN EXTERNAL PICTURE TO AN INDIVIDUAL

You can attach an external picture to an individual but it will be deleted each time you will update your online family tree from a GEDCOM file!

Cross-database alert has finally been enhanced!

Cross-database alert is now more intuitive and display much faster.

Limit the search to your family tree Sosa numbers!

You can now limit the search to your family tree Sosa numbers and compare your direct line against the GeneaNet database. Your result lists will be more clear and effective!

A new interface

The display crashed often because of too long pages. It has been renewed and you can alphabetically sort lists to increase the speed of display.

Of course, the old display process is still available and you can select it at any time.

Recurring options

Alerts have expanded options for recurring weekly, twice-weekly and monthly. If needed, you would never receive email alerts!

More intuitive to use

The archives are accessible by a calendar

To change your preferences, select the "My GeneaNet / Alerts / My crossed alerts" option.

Many thanks for your interest in GeneaNet!
