A Database of Names to Trace Slave Ancestry

Scholars at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond have set out to leaf through eight million documents dating back to the 17th century, seeking the names of slaves. The preliminary results, listing about 1,400 enslaved people and 180 owners, are appearing in a database posted at vahistorical.org.

“Unknown No Longer: A Database of Virginia Slave Names” is searchable by locations, professions and first and last names, among other keywords. Listings for Thomas Jefferson’s holdings do not yet mention Sally Hemings, but they do include “Thruston the son of Isabel” and “Bec daughter of Minerva.”

Immigrants to Canada

In 1803, the British Parliament enacted legislation to regulate vessels carrying emigrants to North America. The master of the vessel was required to prepare a list of passengers. Unfortunately, few such lists have survived and therefore, there are no comprehensive nominal lists of immigrants arriving in Canada before 1865.

Some lists have been identified and indexed by name in this new database. It also includes other types of records such as declarations of aliens and names of some Irish orphans.

An Acadian Parish Reborn

Researchers will find there a new searchable database providing the names of all Roman Catholics baptized, married or buried, 1799-1849, in the predominantly Acadian French township of Argyle, Yarmouth County, as recorded in the first eleven parish registers, all of which have survived.

Each of the 4575 records included in the database is linked to a data table presenting, in both French and English, key information about the event. Below the data table is a digitized image of the page on which the original register entry is found, and another link leading to a full transcription, in French, of that same page.

New Website to Trace Origins of Enslaved Africans

Little is known of the ancestry of Africans pulled into the trans-Atlantic slave trade. A new website, launched at Emory University this week, aims to change that. The African-Origins (http://www.african-origins.org) website provides a rare glimpse of the identities of Africans aboard early nineteenth-century slaving vessels, and through this information, the possibility of tracing the origins of millions of other Africans forcibly transported to the Americas. Public participation will be critical to piecing together this missing history.
